Week 9 My Thoughts about 23 Things

I found 23 Things to be an eyeopener for me. I've heard about YouTube and MySpace and some others but had never taken the time to explore them. I am taking away from this a recognition of Web 2.0 both personal and it's use in the library.

Participating in 23 Things was VERY TIME CONSUMING. I saw something about "15 Minutes"???

Some of my favorite sites were Online Image Generator, Library Thing and Flickr. This definitely changed my attitude about playing.I found the format good. I felt it was relaxed although I got bogged down toward the end. I want to be a Lifelong Learner to keep myself interested and challenged.

Avatar AT LAST

I have been trying to do an avatar. I finally accomplished it. I couldn't find skis and I would have to pay for the boots I wanted ...so she is wearing Bunny Slippers. I never go on the slopes without my helmet. This was frustrating but fun.

Week 9 Audiobooks

I looked around in Overdrive and NetLibrary found Project Gutenberg to be interesting. I found a job I can do after I retire...become a proof-reader at Project Gutenberg. I saw a book to download on Project Gutenberg, FURNISHING THE HOME OF GOOD TASTE by Lucy Abbot Throop. In the copyright area there is a message about it not being copyrighted in the U.S. you would need to check if it would be legal to download it. I thought that was interesting. I just listened to my first audio book on CD it was OK I could knit while I listened. I didn't download anything while exploring these sites.

Week 9 Podcasts

I looked at Podcast.net and Podcast Alley and found Yahoo Podcast to be the most user friendly for me. On Podcast Alley in Games & Hobbies I wanted to go to Crochetville but had to download Podcast Aggregator I didn't do that. On Yahoo Podcasts I was successful with my search on books...got series and episodes containing books. I listened to NPR Books for Monday Jan.23, 2006 of the announcement of the Caldecott and Newbery winners. My best discovery on Merlin was LibVibe a library newscast. We had some contact with podcasts when the Children's librarians read stories to be posted on our web page.

Week 9 Youtube

I decided to keep with the theme and post Chihuly at Phipps as my Youtube entry. I really liked looking at most all of the videos I went into. I think kids would have the most fun using this site if it has uses in the library

Week 8 Web 2.0 Awards

I looked at the Short List of Winners. Saw some sites I already know about, Technorati-Library Thing-Flickr. I was interested in the travel award winners. Farecast was #1 and is airline flights. Kayak was #2 flights, hotels and car rentals. Realtravel was the best one for my interests with discover places to go and things to see. It was #3. I bookmarked five other award winners for future browsing.

Week 8 Online Productivity Tools

I looked around at Zoho writer. Made a document of THEMES FOR STORYHOUR 2007-08 and tried (many, many time to post to my blog)...I finally did it. This Zoho site has lots of good things. I would like to do the Zoho planner and have emails sent to remind me of my scheduled appointments.

Week 7 Sandbox entry

I entered my list of a few favorite children's books to use for story hour on the PB wiki. Also entered my blog on the favorite-blogs area. I copied the url from that entry. http://marylandlibrariessandbox.pbwiki.com/Favorite-Blogs.

Week 7 Wikis

When I looked around at the Library Wikis I found a few interesting things-

When I viewed Wikipedia in the past (before 23 Things) I had no idea it allows users to add, remove and edit content.

I discovered the posibility to post synopses and reviews on library catalogs by library users.

I see the use of collaborating group work instead of sending emails.

I'll go back and spend some time looking around on Book Lover's Wiki.

Our Jennifer has become famous with her idea 23 THINGS OFFICE HOURS at Active Forum Topics on MERLIN Wikis and File Sharing.

Week 6 Del.icio.us - Technorati - My 2.0 Thoughts

Del.icio.us was elusive to me. I got bogged down each time I tried to go in and look around. I finally joined and made myself spend time in del.icio.us. I did searches of PLCMCL2 and mdlearn2. I found "Questing Librarian" on PLCMCL2. I liked her blog on the future library. I didn't know that TAG CLOUDS are a list of tags where size reflects popularity. It is a great way to connect to sites other people with like interests have made. The thought of stalking other people's bookmarks didn't interest me until I looked at a few. It was great. I like the idea of creating bookmarks to be accessed from any computer I am using.

I explored Technorati and registered. I looked at PLCMCL2 and mdlearn2. There was someone griping about being unable to view 2.0 Ottergroup and someone was annoyed by the name and periods of deli.cio.us. I added the top favorite blog "Engadget" to my blog feeds. Top search was Ron Paul, didn't look at that one. Top Blogs, Boingboing which is a weblog of cultural curiosities and interesting technologies. Every place I looked related tags, folksonomies will take you on forever.

The delivery of library services for the future will be an exchange between library staff and customers. Library 2.o signals the end of one directional services. 2.o encourages feedback and participation by customers. I saw a blog about libraries that do IM Reference. In the future the blog buzz will be about the BEST LIBRARIAN AVATAR. Will it me the Nora Avatar or the Pam Avatar that collects the most "Amazon Stars" from satisfied customers. For the most part, I am having fun getting to know this stuff.

LibraryThing

I have used LibraryThing before so this wasn't new to me. I catalogued some books that are on my list to read in the future. Also some books I am reading now for our Book Discussions here at LaVale. The tags I put on these books are very personal to me. I don't think anyone will be finding anything with my tags. I bought a copy of local author Joseph A Murray's book, ALEXANDER HAMILTON:AMERICA'S FORGOTTEN FOUNDER. I put that on my list with a tag of Cumberland, MD. http://www.librarything.com/catalog/ms08lava

Rollyo Dashboard

I made an account with Rollyo and did my own search page on knitting. I used my mrs-sippi knitter as my search engine. I entered a few favorite web sites. http://rollyo.com/marie_shipley/my_mrs-sippi_knitter/. I am in a fog with this one. I am sure I am missing something.

Week 4 RSS & Newsreaders and Merlin

I am using the bloglines feeds I already have from our previous experience with RSS. I get some feeds on knitting, gardening and library related blogs I have added NPR to my feeds this week. Nancy Pearl's Summer Reading List was on a recent NPR Blog.

Visited Merlin and looked at Library News Blogs. The two that caught my eye were "Information Wants to be Free" and "Library Garden". I think I could do some PLAYING with some of the things I've learned this week.

Week 3 Photos and Images

Well, I did some photos and learned lots of new things.

For my blog post about something technology related I looked at new things about cell phones. I could use a new one. Looked around on "Mobiledia". I guess I should be able to at least take a picture with my cell phone. Didn't make a decision yet but I have a better idea of what is available and will be available.

My pictures from Flickr

My visit to Flickr got me a little carried away with Dale Chihuly pictures. We saw the two from the New York Botanical Garden and are going to the Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburg to see his installation there.

Habit 1 easiest - Setting a goal
Habit 7 1/2 hardest - Play

My name for my blog is from a little boy many years ago who couldn't say Mrs. Shipley. He called me "Mississippi"
